IRSC history professor Robert R. Farley will present an illustrated talk, “Florida Land Boom and Bust of the 1920s,” on Monday, October 29 from 2:30-4:00 p.m. in the John F. Armstrong Wing of the Blake Library, 2351 S.E. Monterey Road in Stuart. Funded by the Friends of the Martin County Library System, the event is free and open to the public.

October 29, 1929, better known as “Black Tuesday,” was the day the Wall Street Stock Market crashed, ushering in the Great Depression that would last for 12 years. However, an omen of such hard times forecasted this monumental event: the Florida Land Boom and Bust 1920-1926.The same optimism of “easy profits” of the Roaring Twenties that fueled the stock market bubble was seen in Florida earlier. Both met with a similar fate: foreclosures, bankruptcies and unemployment on an unparalleled scale. History repeated itself 80 years later in the collapse of the Florida real estate market. As George Santayana once wrote, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”
