Duck in the Truck Puppets to perform at Hoke Library Jan. 4

Duck in the Truck Puppets will present “Happy Birthday, Dragon,” an interactive show for  
grades pre-K to 3, Friday, January 4 at 6:00 p.m. at the Hoke Library, 1150 N.W. Jack Williams Way, Jensen Beach.

With help from Angel Duck and Chef Gregory, Professor O and Speaker the Wonder Dog make a baby dragon’s dream come true by giving him a birthday to remember and his very own home.

Sponsored by the Friends of the Martin County Library System, Inc., the event is free. No tickets or reservations are needed.

Duck in the Truck Puppets will present “I Got a Dragon for Christmas” 3:00 p.m. Friday, December 28 at the Elisabeth Lahti Library, 15200 SW Adams Avenue, Indiantown, and 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 29 at the Peter and Julie Cummings Library, 2551 SW Matheson Avenue, Palm City.  No tickets or reservations are needed.

The fun begins when Speaker the Wonder Dog shows Professor O his Christmas gifts and they discover a dragon’s egg.  Sponsored by the Friends of the Martin County Library System, the interactive show is recommended for grades pre-K to 3.

Elisabeth Lahti Library in Indiantown kicks off

National Hispanic Heritage Month with

September 15 family festival

         

On Saturday, September 15 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. the Elisabeth Lahti Library, located at 15200 SW Adams Avenue in Indiantown, will kick off National Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15 through October 15, with a Hispanic Heritage Festival for the entire family. 

Funded by the Friends of the Elisabeth Lahti Library in Indiantown, Florida, Inc., the event is free and open to the public. No tickets are required.

Enjoy Latin American food samples, live marimba music in the park by Guatemalan band Maya Quetzal, art displays by Warfield Elementary School students, and numerous activities for children including face painting, a visit with Dora the Explorer, and a 4 p.m. puppet show by Duck in the Truck Puppets

Library system celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month

Library system celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month with special events Sept. 15 and 22

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15 by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan and enacted into law in 1988. Twelve percent of Martin County’s residents are of Hispanic descent, and that number is projected to increase by 36.2% over the next four years.

On Saturday, September 15 at 3:00 p.m. the Elisabeth Lahti Library, located at 15200 SW Adams Avenue in Indiantown, will kick off the month with a Hispanic Heritage Festival offering Latin American food samples, live  marimba music in the park, art displays by Warfield elementary School students, and numerous activities for children including face painting, a visit with Dora the Explorer, and a puppet show. 

The Robert Morgade Library, located at 5851 SE Community Drive in Stuart, continues the celebration Saturday, September 22 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. with The Vega Brothers—Mario and Silvano—performing a selection of Latin American tunes on Paraguayan harp and guitar.

Funded by the library Friends groups, each event is free and open to the public.  No tickets are required.

Curious Moon Puppets to Present “Tessa’s Tree” for Children of All Ages at Cummings Library June 9

Curious Moon Puppet Theatre to Perform June 9 at Cummings Library

As part of Martin County Library System’s Children’s Summer Reading Program, Curious Moon Puppets, based in Brunswick, Ga., will present “Tessa’s Tree,” a 40-minute show for children of all ages using traditional homemade hand and rod puppets,  Saturday, June 9 at 11:00 a.m. in the Donahue Room of the Cummings Library, 2551 SW Matheson Avenue, Palm City. Funding is provided by the six MCLS Friends groups and advertising provided by the Library Foundation of Martin County. No tickets or reservations are needed. The event is free and open to the public. 

“Tessa’s Tree” is the story of a little tree who has big dreams and learns to appreciate the best within himself thanks to the help of the little girl who loves him. This tale of discovering one’s own, unique gifts is highlighted by comic forest characters and catchy music. The show is followed by a demonstration speech about the puppets and puppeteering.

Lights!  Color!  Action!  Storyteller and puppeteer Katie Adams performs

Hispanic stories with a dash of Spanish words and a splash of colorful shadow

puppets. 

 

Stories include “How Color Came to the World,” an Aztec myth about the

origin of the rainbow, “The Proud Cuckoo Bird,” a Mayan tale from Mexico,

“Mariposa Martinez,” a favorite tale from Cuba about a butterfly, and “Medio

Pollito,” a folktale from Spain that has traveled all over Latin America.

 

This forty-five minute show is suitable for children of all ages.
