‘Wellness in Motion’ at five MCLS locations throughout October

For Breast Cancer Awareness month, Martin County Library System has teamed up with Jupiter Medical Center to provide digital mammogram screenings at five of their community library locations throughout the month of October.

Wellness in Motion is Jupiter Medical Center’s mobile mammography and health and wellness unit that travels around areas of Palm Beach and Martin Counties. Wellness in Motion is a patient-friendly, comfortable, convenient and technologically sophisticated vehicle providing health services to the community.

Mammograms are performed by certified radiologic technologists and images are interpreted by board-certified radiologists. No prescription is necessary for a screening mammogram. Visit http://www.jupitermed.com/WIM for more info on WIM’s provided services.

Some more details on the mammogram screenings:

-No physician prescription required (women ages 40+)

-Regular insurance coverage applies

-Discount pricing available for uninsured

-If possible, bring prior images to expedite your results

-Mammograms take only fifteen minutes to complete

-Walk-ons welcome (bring insurance card and photo ID)

Thursday, April 10 from 2 to 3:30pm, at Hoke Library, 1150 NW Jack Williams Way, Jensen Beach, Rev. Laurie Ann Leach, LST, LMT, CLT will be conducting a Guided Meditation workshop for those looking to find out more about how meditation can help you and your life.

Life fills us with moments of extreme joy and heartache, can take us by surprise in the best of ways or worst of ways. Guided meditation can help you through these times in your life when you are in need, a simple process of literally “changing your mind”. The art of this method of healing and the mind is easy to learn and practice.

Join Rev. Laurie Ann Leach, LST, LMT, CLT to find out more and have your questions answered. Laurie Ann is a New England native and has been trained by some of the pioneers in the field of Integrative Medicine; the late Pauline Sasaki – Zen & Quantum Shiatsu; Dr. Deepak Chopra – Quantum Physics in Medicine and Guided Meditation; Dr. Wayne Dyer – Power of Positive Thinking; the late Prof. Wang Jin Yua – Chinese Pressing Point Massage and QiGong Chinese Medicine (see Bill Moyers Healing and The Mind specials on YouTube); plus many more. Journey Stories Music Series continues with Irish folksinger Brendan Nolan at Hoke Library April 11

Irish folksinger Brendan Nolan will be performing at 6:30 pm, Friday, April 11 at the Hoke Library, 1150 NW Jack Williams Way, Jensen Beach. This event is free and open to the public, no tickets or registration required. This concert is another installment of the Journey Stories Music Series.

An enchanting evening is in store with Irish folk musician Brendan Nolan’s rich baritone voice, good humor, and masterful playing of acoustic guitar and bodhran. The popular Irish festival headliner will sing both contemporary and traditional Celtic/Irish songs.

Born in Dublin, Brendan Nolan started his musical life as a drummer and later turned to folk and acoustic music, becoming well known in Canada and throughout the United States. His latest release is titled “Live at the Side Door,” recorded live in April 2013 with Colin Farrell, at the Side Door club of the Palladium in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Matthew Sabatella and the Rambling String Band to perform at Hoke Library February 21

Friday, February 21 at 6:30 pm, Matthew Sabatella and the Rambling String Band will present an evening of traditional American folk songs at the Hoke Library, 1150 NW Jack Williams Way, Jensen Beach, in partnership with Journey Stories.

The Rambling String Band features Matthew on vocals, guitar, banjo, and mountain dulcimer; Jack Stamates on fiddle; Chris DeAngelis on bass fiddle and vocals; Lynn Griffith on banjo, mandolin, and vocals; and Sean Edelson on mandolin and guitar. They maintain a consistent performance schedule at festivals, concert halls, performing arts centers, museums, nightclubs, coffeehouses, parks, libraries, and schools ranging from elementary through college.

Six-week women’s literature book study group begins Jan. 16 at Hoke Library

Women in Literature Part XII, a six-session book study group facilitated by Gail Johnson, will take place 2:00 pm – 3:15 pm Thursday, Jan. 16, Jan. 30, Feb. 6, Feb. 20, March 6 and March 20 in the Community Room of the Hoke Library, 1150 NW Jack Williams Way, Jensen Beach. Funded by the Friends of the Martin County Library System, Inc., the events are free and open to the public.

These discussions center around books with issues of interest in today’s world. The books, usually by women authors, feature characters, conflicts and themes that resonate in our lives. A limited number of books are available at the Service Desk of the library. For assistance ask one of the Public Services library staff. Please call 772-463-2870 to register.

Alligators! Outlaws! And Tourists! with author Mary E. Dawson begins January 21

Beginning Tuesday, January 21 through April 12, Mary E. Dawson, award-winning author of The River Way Home: The Adventures of the Cowboy, the Indian & The Amazon Queen, will be taking attendees on a journey through the alligator-infested swamps and pristine rivers of western Martin County a hundred years ago-to the city of Stuart in the year it became a city. Through historical photographs and true stories, you’ll meet the real people and places that inspired her rollicking old-Florida adventure which was named Best Florida Fiction for 2013 by the Florida Authors and Publishers Association. Plus, you’ll learn something fun and new about Martin County’s history!

Providing a vivid snapshot of Martin County in 1914, The River Way Home tells the story of three teens from different cultural backgrounds, a Cracker, a Seminole, and an African-American girl, when they lose their boat in a storm on Lake Okeechobee and must navigate their way back home through the Floridian jungle of western Martin County. History buffs will be excited to learn that the novel also includes a section dedicated to old photographs and historical essays that explain the origin of the characters’ issues, and events portrayed in the tale.
