Blake Library to hold family fossil “show and tell” October 13

Fred Mazza of Paleo Discoveries will present Fossil Discovery Hour, an educational fossil “show and tell” for families, Saturday, October 13 from 3:00-4:00 p.m. in the John F. Armstrong Wing of the Blake Library, 2351 S.E. Monterey Road, Stuart.

See and hold rare and unusual Florida fossils.  A question-and-answer session is included.

Sponsored by the Friends of the Blake Library in Stuart, Inc., the event is free and open to the public. Group size is limited to 100.  Pre-registration is required.  Please call 772-221-1407 to register.

2012-2013 Non-fiction Book Club resumes at Blake Library beginning Sept. 24

starts up again at Blake Library Sept. 24
         

Martin County Library System’s 2012-2013 Non-Fiction Book Club will meet in the second floor Trustees Room of the Blake Library, 2351 S.E. Monterey Road in Stuart, on the fourth Monday of each month from September 24 through May 20 except for December when there will be no session.

Join facilitator Jackie Williams and others in lively discussions on topical selections.  A limited number of books are available at the Circulation desk of the Blake Library one month prior to each session.  Sponsored by the Friends of the Blake Library in Stuart, Inc., the sessions are free and open to the public.  Pre-registration is not required.

Blake Library to host Sept. 22 seminar, Mapping the Middle, for parents and middle school youth

Mapping the Middle, first of eight Our Kids! parent seminars, focuses on middle school youth  
          

Mapping the Middle: A Parent’s Guide to All Things Tween, a seminar for parents and middle school youth, will be held Saturday, September 22 from 9:30 a.m.-2:00 p.m. at the Blake Library, 2351 S.E. Monterey Road, Stuart.

Moderator and keynote speaker Ginny Luther of Peaceful Parenting will present “Quit Taking It Personally: Understanding the Adolescent Brain.” The seminar includes a panel discussion with leading experts discussing topics affecting middle school age youth, followed by workshops on topics such as healthy relationships and dating, tween health, bullying/cyber bullying, Conscious Discipline, youth etiquette and Internet safety. A special workshop for tweens only, “Etiquette with The Elite School of Protocol,” will be offered.

This is a free event. Lunch is provided. Pre-registration is required. Call 772-221-1407 for more information.

One of eight presentations scheduled at Martin County libraries through April 2013, this seminar is presented in collaboration with the Martin County Library System, CHARACTER COUNTS! a program of United Way of Martin County, Tykes & Teens, Children’s Services Council, and the Martin County School District.

Dr. Professor Wacky will present an unforgettable science show Thursday, August 2 at 6:00 p.m. in the John F. Armstrong Wing of the Blake Library, 2351 S.E. Monterey Road, Stuart, as part of the Martin County Library System children’s summer reading program. 

This crazy professor loves to play with science, music and magic! Learn about gas, carbon dioxide, miscibility and more from the fun, wacky good doctor. All of the experiments done in this show can be recreated at home by kids.

Teens to create dream journals July 25 at Blake Library

 

 

   

Teens who like to keep track of their dreams will be able to make their very own dream journals Wednesday, July 25 from 3:30-5:00 p.m. at the Blake Library, 2351 S.E. Monterey Road, Stuart.  Part of the Martin County Library System teen summer reading program, Own the Night, this event is a follow-up to the Dream Interpretation program to be held July 19 at the Blake Library.

Do you believe in ghosts?  If you didn’t before, you might after meeting a member of PCI (Paranormal Crossroads Investigations) Monday, July 16 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the John F. Armstrong Wing of the Blake Library, 2351 S.E. Monterey Road, Stuart. 

Formerly known as the Florida Ghost Team,  Paranormal Crossroads Investigations is a professional and reputable paranormal investigation team.  A PCI member will be on hand to discuss the group’s purpose and methods in searching for the scientific truth behind the supernatural.

Play With Books, Transform Them Into New Objects at July 14 Blake Library Workshop

 “Playing With Books,” July 14
            

Martin County Library System will present an altered book workshop, “Playing With Books,” Saturday, July 14 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. in the John F. Armstrong Wing of the Blake Library, 2351 SE Monterey Road, Stuart.  The third in a series of six special Adult Summer Reading Program events, the free workshop is funded by the Friends of the Blake Library in Stuart, Inc.

Join us for a workshop that explores basic techniques for altering books.  Re-imagine retired books into new objects.  Bring your imagination and a few supplies if you wish.  We will have a selection of paperback and hardcover books available.  Basic supplies for the crafts will be provided.  If you have cutting mats, craft knives and retired books you may bring your own to work with.  Suitable for teens and adults.

Attending “Playing With Books” qualifies you to participate in a raffle for a gift basket that day.  Attending the July 14 program or any other special Adult Summer Reading Program event scheduled at Martin County community libraries through August 7 will qualify you to be registered for a grand prize drawing held August 13.  Events are free and open to the public. Enter the Space Race—Register NOW for July 12 StarLab Planetarium Adventure!

 Join us on a fantastic adventure through space Thursday, July 12 as the South Florida Science Museum brings its portable planetarium to the John F. Armstrong Wing of the Blake Library, 2351 S.E. Monterey Road, Stuart. 

Venture inside the dome and learn cool characteristics about planets and other objects in our Solar System.  Space is still available for each of the two sessions, from 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.-1:00 p.m.
