Library system celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month with special events Sept. 15 and 22

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15 by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan and enacted into law in 1988. Twelve percent of Martin County’s residents are of Hispanic descent, and that number is projected to increase by 36.2% over the next four years.

On Saturday, September 15 at 3:00 p.m. the Elisabeth Lahti Library, located at 15200 SW Adams Avenue in Indiantown, will kick off the month with a Hispanic Heritage Festival offering Latin American food samples, live  marimba music in the park, art displays by Warfield elementary School students, and numerous activities for children including face painting, a visit with Dora the Explorer, and a puppet show.

The Robert Morgade Library, located at 5851 SE Community Drive in Stuart, continues the celebration Saturday, September 22 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. with The Vega Brothers—Mario and Silvano—performing a selection of Latin American tunes on Paraguayan harp and guitar.

Funded by the library Friends groups, each event is free and open to the public.  No tickets are required.
