Martin County Library System is offering free tax assistance at four of its library locations from February 3 through April 11, 2014.  Following is a schedule with locations and times that tax help will be available:

Taxpayers are urged to ensure they have all required forms before arriving, including valid photo identification, social security card and the social security cards of any dependents. AARP Tax-Aide is a program of the AARP Foundation, offered in cooperation with the IRS and the Martin County Library System.

Six-part Women in Literature book study group begins Feb. 19 at Blake Library

Women in Literature Part XV, a six-session book study group facilitated by Jeri Butler, Kim Carvel and Gail Johnson, will take place Wednesday, February 19 through March 26 from 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm at the Blake Library, 2351 S.E. Monterey Road, Stuart.  Funded by the Friends of the Martin County Library System, Inc., the sessions are free and open to the public. A limited number of books are available at the Blake Library Circulation desk. Signup is not required.

Among the questions addressed during this series are: What characterizes women characters? How are they different from male characters? Are gender differences cultural or biological? What kinds of plots are associated with women, and how do they see their lives and possibilities?

Six-week women’s literature book study group begins Jan. 16 at Hoke Library

Women in Literature Part XII, a six-session book study group facilitated by Gail Johnson, will take place 2:00 pm – 3:15 pm Thursday, Jan. 16, Jan. 30, Feb. 6, Feb. 20, March 6 and March 20 in the Community Room of the Hoke Library, 1150 NW Jack Williams Way, Jensen Beach. Funded by the Friends of the Martin County Library System, Inc., the events are free and open to the public.

These discussions center around books with issues of interest in today’s world. The books, usually by women authors, feature characters, conflicts and themes that resonate in our lives. A limited number of books are available at the Service Desk of the library. For assistance ask one of the Public Services library staff. Please call 772-463-2870 to register.

2014 Elisabeth Lahti Concert Series kicks off January 4 at Cummings Library with Mel Torme tribute

The jazz ensemble Jonathan Cummings and Friends will present a tribute to the legendary jazz singer Mel Tormé at 2:00 pm Saturday, January 4 at the Peter & Julie Cummings Library, 2551 S.W. Matheson Avenue, Palm City, as part of a four-part concert series underwritten by Elisabeth Lahti.

The Donahue Room will fill with the smooth sounds of crooner Cummings, who, along with his experience as a backup singer for Barry Manilow, brings with him trumpeter Mark Green, drummer Claudio Berardi, alto saxophonist Bob Sagnella, bass guitarist Randy Ward and Bud Skiles on keyboard.

Free tickets are required and available for pickup only at the Peter & Julie Cummings Library beginning Tuesday, December 31. Please note the library will be closed January 1.

The next concert in the Elisabeth Lahti Concert Series will be countertenor Terry Barber and Friends on February 1, followed by The Rowdy Micks on March 1 and Paraguayan harpist Marcos Vega with guitarist Clark Hower on April 12.

A call to artists for juried art show at Elisabeth Lahti Library, March through April 2014

A juried art show, titled “Florida’s Cowboys and Indians,” will be held in the spring at the Elisabeth Lahti Library, 15200 SW Adams Ave, Indiantown, continuing the Martin County Library System’s focus on Florida’s rich and diverse history through the Journey Stories series. All Florida artists are eligible.

The exhibit will run from Saturday, March 15 through Saturday, April 12, with viewing hours Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays 10:00 am-4:00 pm, as well as Wednesdays 12:00-4:00 pm.

The timeline for artwork submissions is as follows: on Tuesday, March 11 from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm submissions may be dropped off at the Elisabeth Lahti Library. Submitted works will be selected the following Wednesday, March 12. Artists whose work has not been selected for exhibition will be notified on Thursday, March 13 by 4:00 pm (if artists are not notified, this means their work has been accepted). In the case that an artist’s work has not been selected, their pieces will be available for pick-up Friday, March 14 from 10:00am – 1:00pmThe exhibit will begin March 15, though the event’s opening reception will be held March 22 from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm for the public.

Artists seeking to submit their work must be aware of the following stipulations: artwork must be no larger than 40” wide; artwork must be dry, framed and wired for hanging (no toothed brackets, Plexiglas only), artwork may be tagged NFS (Not For Sale), artwork may NOT be withdrawn before close of exhibit, and artwork must be labeled on the back with artist’s name, phone number, title, medium, size, and price. Finally, and most important of all, all artwork must pertain to the overarching theme of the exhibition: “Florida’s Cowboys and Indians.”

Stuart Community Concert Band to ring in the holidays with two concerts at Blake Library Dec. 14

The Stuart Community Concert Band will hold holiday concerts at 11:00 am and at 2:00 pm Saturday, December 14 in the John F. Armstrong Wing of the Blake Library, 2351 SE Monterey Road, Stuart.

The public is invited to share in the holiday spirit and enjoy seasonal favorites performed by this well-loved ensemble. Seating is limited. You must have a ticket to see either performance.

Free tickets will be distributed beginning Monday, December 9, between 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm in the Blake Library lobby and will be available thereafter at the Blake Circulation desk. Limit of two per person, please.

Treasure Coast Classical Children’s Choir brings song and dance to Blake Library with holiday concert Dec. 13

Art historian to present special Art Spot on stained glass windows of Stuart church Dec. 3 at Blake Library

As part of Jane Miller’s ongoing Art Spot Film Series, art historian Darcy Weir will present a Special Art Spot, “The Stained Glass Windows of St. Mary’s,” on Tuesday, December 3 from 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm in the John F. Armstrong Wing of the Blake Library, 2351 S.E. Monterey Road, Stuart. Refreshments and a book sale follow the talk. Sponsored by the Friends of Martin County Library System, Inc., the event is free and open to the public.

In this PowerPoint presentation on the big screen, Ms. Weir will discuss art of the Bible stories portrayed in the windows of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Stuart, and present art by masters such as Michelangelo, Rembrandt, Van Gogh and others who painted Bible scenes.

Darcy Weir did her doctoral studies in classical Green and Latin as a Jacob Javits Fellow. She studied art history in Paris at l’Ecole du Louvre, the Louvre Museum’s Art History Institute. She and her husband lived in Paris many years where they still have a home; they now divide their time among Paris, Quebec and Palm City. She has given lectures on art history in London, Paris, Canada and recently at the Elliott Museum in Stuart.

Civic engagement event focused on Indian River Lagoon to take place at Blake Library Dec. 9

Martin County Library System will host a community forum discussing the Indian River Lagoon at 6:00 pm on Monday, December 9 in the John F. Armstrong Wing of the Blake Library, 2351 SE Monterey Road, Stuart.

In a roundtable format, Noreen Fisher, member of the Library Foundation of Martin County’s Board of Directors and president of the League of Women Voters, will moderate a civil conversation with community members focused on the Indian River Lagoon. All points of view are welcome, but please note that this is neither a debate nor a rally and that no distribution of literature from any group is permitted.

The forum’s purpose being to facilitate civil conversation in a neutral environment, this will be a respectful discussion among members of the community. Tickets for the free event will be available to the first 30 people in line.

Playing With Books workshop takes on holiday theme at Cummings Library Dec. 7

Martin County Library System will present Playing With Books, Holiday Edition II at the Peter & Julie Cummings Library, 2551 SW Matheson Road, Palm City, on Saturday, December 7 from 2:00 – 4:00 pm in the Donahue Room.

Participants will upcycle, repurpose and reimage books for holiday decorations. Creating gift tags from maps is just one of the possibilities. Supplies will be provided–bring only your imagination!

The workshop is free and open to adults and teens.  No registration is required.
