January 13, 2014
Mark Perry, FOS Director, “Celebrating 50 Years of Environmental Stewardship”
The Florida Oceanographic Society was established on July 20, 1964 as a not-for-profit 501(c)(3). The Society supported several research and educational programs from 1964 to 1970 including shark, bivalve, fish and educational publications. In the 1970s there were shrimp aquaculture programs and marine science teacher workshops. In 1978, under Mark Perry’s direction, the first St. Lucie Estuary Conference was held. The 1980s and 1990s ushered in a period of major construction including the Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center on Hutchinson Island in great part due to the generosity of Frances Langford and the support of Martin County. Following the 50-year history of Florida Oceanographic in many ways is like a history of the county.

Various south Florida localities will illustrate the talk. There will also be hands-on specimens of Florida fossils, rocks and minerals which will be circulated as the talk proceeds.
