Journey Stories logoCelebrate the arrival of the Smithsonian Institution’s traveling exhibit Journey Stories during the grand opening Saturday, October 19 from 11:00 am – 4:00 pm at the Elisabeth Lahti Library, 15200 SW Adams Ave, Indiantown. The exhibit will be available at the library October 19 – November 30 and is free and open to the public.

Opening remarks from Library Director Brett Lear, County Administrator Taryn Kryzda and County Commissioner Anne Scott will begin at 11:00 am. The event also features performances by country line group Diamond Dancers, La Herencia Latina Orchestra, praise dancers R3 Outreach Program, singer Patricia Hagin, and music and dance using the marimba. Cultural groups, organizations and businesses will have tables set up. Attendees are asked to bring their own chairs if desired.

Journey Stories depicts historical accounts of how we and our ancestors came to America. The exhibit examines the intersection between various means of travel and Americans’ desire to feel free to move. The stories are diverse and focus on immigration, migration, innovation and freedom.

The exhibit was made possible by a grant received from the Florida Humanities Council along with local funding from the Arts Foundation of Martin County and Women Supporting the Arts.

Events exploring the six Journey Stories themes have been taking place at all Martin County libraries and will continue in the months following the Smithsonian exhibit.

The Elisabeth Lahti Library is open Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10:00 am – 5:30 pm and Wednesday from noon – 8:00 pm. To reach the library by phone, call 772-597-4200.
