Facilitator Jackie Williams takes an in-depth look at the life of Ruth Bryan Owen, Florida’s first female representative in the United States Congress, on Monday, March 18 from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Blake Library, 2351 S.E. Monterey Road, Stuart. The event is free and open to the public.

In 1928, just three years after Martin County was established and eight years after women were granted the right to vote, Owen was elected to Congress by the people of Florida’s 4th Congressional District. A mother of four, she became the first and, up to the present, the only woman to represent Martin County in Congress. She was also the first woman appointed as a U.S. Ambassador and the first woman to earn a spot on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
