The Robert Morgade Library celebrates the grand opening of the exhibit We Were Here: The People of the Water on Monday, March 4 at 6:00 p.m. The event, free and open to the public, features an exciting first look at the exhibit, an informational lecture on Belle Glade culture presented by Christian Davenport, Historic Preservation Officer/Archaeologist for Palm Beach County, and refreshments. The Robert Morgade Library is located at 5851 S.E. Community Drive on the Chastain Campus of Indian River State College, Stuart.

The People of the Water, as they have been aptly named, lived for at least 2,500 years in Florida’s waters, including Martin County. As the exhibit explains, they built what could be considered the first fish farms, as well as the longest canal system, in North America. Their historical imprint can still be seen across the Florida landscape today.

We Were Here is a Viva Florida 500 traveling exhibition presented by the Lawrence E. Will Museum: A Museum of the Belle Glades, and is being exhibited in regions where The People of the Water lived. Their story will be on display at the Robert Morgade Library March 4 – 23
