Learn building blocks your child needs to succeed

For immediate release:  November 14, 2012

CHARACTER COUNTS!, Tykes & Teens, the Martin County Library System and the Martin County School District, in collaboration with Children’s Services Council of Martin County and United Way of Martin County, will host a parent training seminar, Building Blocks for Raising Healthy Youth, on Thursday, December 6 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Blake Library, 2351 S.E. Monterey Road, Stuart. The fourth of eight presentations in the Our Kids! Parent Seminar Series scheduled at Martin County libraries through April 2013, this seminar will be presented by Jill Sheppell, Facilitator for the Shared Services Network of Martin County. Pre-registration is required.  Please call 772-221-1407 to reserve your space.

More than four decades of research has identified 40 Building Blocks that are strongly linked to young people’s success in life, including academic interest and achievement, leadership, involvement in the community, and healthy and safe lifestyles.

Since its creation in 1990, Search Institute’s framework of Developmental Assets has become the most widely used approach to positive youth development in the United States.  Studies of more than 2.2 million young people consistently show that the more assets young people have, the less likely they are to engage in a wide range of high-risk behaviors and the more likely they are to thrive.

The December 6 workshop is a presentation on the 40 Developmental Assets all kids need to succeed. This presentation will introduce the asset-building message to parents, inspiring future commitment and action toward creating healthy communities for youth.  This workshop will help participants:
• Understand the Developmental Assets, including why they are important and how to use them.
• Understand and apply the eight areas of developmental needs; support, empowerment, boundaries and expectations, constructive use of time, commitment to learning, positive values, social competencies and positive identity.
• Learn from stories and concrete examples of community-based asset building and consider how to apply them to their own efforts.
• Accept the challenge of carrying the asset-building approach into their professional and /or personal life.
