Get help from Photoshop expert at Cummings Library idea lab August 16, 23 and 30

Cummings Library idea lab presents multi-session Ask-the-Expert program

on Photoshop beginning August 16

      
Have you tried using Adobe Photoshop to edit your images or make your own logo but need a little extra help in order to succeed? Professional artist and instructor Kelly Arnold will be staffing the idea lab and available to answer questions specific to Photoshop on Thursday, August 16, 23 and 30 from 3:00-4:00 p.m. No registration is necessary. Questions will be answered on a first come, first served basis. 

Located in the Cummings Library at 2551 S.W. Matheson Avenue in Palm City, the newly-launched idea lab is a digital resource center with tools and resources available for the community to create, learn and explore. Classes on a variety of topics will be presented regularly, but don’t miss this special opportunity to let Kelly assist you in the creative process!

Kelly Arnold is a full-time artist and teacher. Her paintings and gicleé prints can be found on her website KellyArnold.com as well as hanging throughout the community. Her experience in pre-press and computer graphics gained while working in the printing industry has been a prelude to her classes in computer graphic arts, animation and website creation. She most recently has expanded her teachings to the Internet through OnlineArtTeacher.com.

Hobe Sound Public Library to hold Martin County at Night

Photography Reception August 11

 
This summer, as part of Martin County Library System’s “Between the Covers” Adult Summer Reading Program, members of the community are being encouraged to submit their photographs of Martin County at Night to the library system via mclsprograms@martin.fl.us. If you haven’t done so yet, be sure to add your favorite nighttime Martin County shot to the collection, because soon it will be time to celebrate that creative expression.

Photographs of Martin County at Night will be on display at a reception Saturday, August 11 from 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. in the Community Room of the Hobe Sound Public Library, 10595 S.E. Federal Highway, Hobe Sound. Also at the reception there will be computers set up to show off the digital collection and demonstrations of how to access the online photos will be provided. Resources to help you set up your own online photography collection will be available. Light refreshments will be served.    

Funded by the Friends of the Hobe Sound Library, the event is free and open to all.

Tech Tuesdays! offers kids an introduction to Cummings Library

idea lab technology

during August and September

Want to learn how to make a PowerPoint for class? Take better pictures? Even make your own short movie? Then join us in the Cummings Library for Tech Tuesdays!

Kids ages 8 to 14 can learn some of the cool things you can do and create in the library using the equipment hosted in the idea lab, Martin County Library System’s new digital resource center, on Tuesdays in August and September in the DiTerlizzi Room of the Cummings Library, 2551 S.W. Matheson Avenue, Palm City.
 
Following is the initial schedule:  3:30-5:00 p.m., August 7, 14, 21 and 28; September 4, 11, 18 and 25.

Mystery Night, the final program in a series of six special events in Martin County Library System’s adult summer reading program Between the Covers, will take place Tuesday, August 7 from 6:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. in the Community Room of the Hobe Sound Public Library, located at 10595 S.E. Federal Highway, Hobe Sound 33455. Sponsored by the Friends of the Hobe Sound Library, the event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. 

Mystery Writer Challenge 2012, which began July 10 at Hobe Sound Public Library, concludes August 7 with Mystery Night and a game of “Who Am I?” in which each participant wears an author’s name on his or her back and guesses the author’s identity by asking other players. The game features dozens of famous authors and scores of questions.

There also will be a key to the ongoing Challenge to see how well players have done. Pick up a quiz at the Hobe Sound Public Library while there’s still time—it will test your knowledge of United States mystery writers’ story locations and facts about their main characters.

Attending Mystery Night will qualify you to be registered for a drawing for a gift basket that evening as well as for a grand prize drawing held August 13. Dr. Professor Wacky uses music and magic in August 2 Blake Library science show

Dr. Professor Wacky will present an unforgettable science show Thursday, August 2 at 6:00 p.m. in the John F. Armstrong Wing of the Blake Library, 2351 S.E. Monterey Road, Stuart, as part of the Martin County Library System children’s summer reading program. 

This crazy professor loves to play with science, music and magic! Learn about gas, carbon dioxide, miscibility and more from the fun, wacky good doctor. All of the experiments done in this show can be recreated at home by kids.

Sponsored by the Friends of the Blake Library in Stuart, Inc., the program is free and open to children of all ages.

Bat men and women of Bat Conservation International and Hobe Sound Nature Center to present Bats: Myth and Reality at Hoke Library

Bat Conservation International and the Hobe Sound Nature Center will present “Bats: Myth and Reality” on Wednesday, August 1 at 2:00 p.m. in the Community Room of the Hoke Library, 1150 N.W. Jack Williams Way, Jensen Beach 34957, as part of Martin County Library System’s Children’s Summer Reading Program.

Learn about the importance and ecology of bats, unloved and misunderstood by many.  Find out why they are disappearing, hear truths rather than myths and take a close look at the different species found around the world.

Funded by the Friends of the Hoke Library in Jensen Beach, Inc., the event is free and open to children entering grades K-5.  Pre-registration is not needed.

Cummings Library Teen Scene presents Steampunk Saturday July 28

     
Teens, join us Saturday, July 28 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Cummings Library, 2551 SW Matheson Avenue, Palm City, for Steampunk Saturday. (For those who don’t know, Steampunk is an imaginative genre that draws from science fiction, fantasy and alternate history where steam power is used—think H. G. Wells and Jules Verne).

Get ready for some Steampunk fun! During the program you can watch a screening of a PG 13 film about the character Sherlock Holmes. Also make a steampunk collage or some steampunk jewelry. Feel free to come dressed to the theme, but costumes are definitely not required! A snack will be served.

Part of Martin County Library System’s Teen Summer Reading Program, “Own the Night,” Steampunk Saturday is sponsored by the Friends of the Palm City Library. No tickets or reservations are needed. The event is free and open to teens entering grades 6 through 12.

Teens and tweens can take part in a juggling experience at the Hands-On Circus Camp to be held at the Hobe Sound Public Library, 10595 S.E. Federal Highway in Hobe Sound on Saturday, July 28 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  Part of the Martin County Library System Teen Summer Reading Program and funded by the Friends of the Hobe Sound Library, the event is free and open to students entering grades 5-12.

Lizi Franzini, international circus performer, brings spinning plates, beanbags, juggling scarves, diabolos and crystal sticks for hands-on action.  Pre-registration is required.  Limited to 60 participants.  Please call 772-546-2257 to register.

Martin County Library System is holding special events during its Adult Summer Reading Program, Between the Covers.  The fourth in the series, “Night Moves,” takes place Saturday, July 28 at 3:00 p.m. in the Community Room of the Elisabeth Lahti Library, 15200 SW Adams Avenue, Indiantown.  Funded by the Friends of the Elisabeth Lahti Library of Indiantown, Florida, the event is free and open to the public.

Join the excitement as Alma Flores, traditional Latin folk dance teacher, presents dance instruction for “El Zapateado,” a traditional Latin dance marked by rhythmic tapping of the heels.  Partners are not necessary.

Attending “Night Moves” qualifies you to participate in a raffle for a gift basket that day.  Attending the July 28 program or any other special Adult Summer Reading Program event scheduled at Martin County community libraries through August 7 will qualify you to be registered for a grand prize drawing held August 13.
