Partnership Between Library Homework Helpers and Extended Day Program

 Is Out of This World!

Every summer Martin County Library System sends its homework helpers out to Extended Day sites to do story times and craft activities.  This year, thanks to this ongoing collaboration between the library system and the Martin County School District (MCSD), pre-K to second grade Extended Day students will experience not only stories and crafts but also imaginary travel to other planets.

At the request of Patrick Murray, head of the Extended Day Program, the school district has purchased 500 copies of the award-winning book Going Around the Sun: Some Planetary Fun, written by Marianne Berkes and illustrated by Janeen Mason.  Copies will be distributed to every Extended Day student throughout the county the week of July 9.

Illustrator Janeen Mason says, “I am delighted they’re providing to all of their students soft cover copies of Going Around the Sun: Some Planetary Fun, which… is being featured this summer in all Florida libraries.  Marianne Berkes, the author, used to be a children’s librarian and she spent time in children’s theatre, so when she wrote this book she did so to the tune of ‘Over in the Meadow.’ (She’s simply brilliant.)  When I illustrated the book I used crayons on a pancake griddle.  There are tons of activities the kids can do with camp counselors, parents and teachers.  (And they’re featured in the back of the book.)”

Going Around the Sun was chosen by the State Library to represent the collaborative summer
reading program because it best exemplifies the theme, Dream Big READ.  Every library in the state participating in the program has received a copy.  The book also is a Florida Reading Association’s 2011-2012 Children’s Book Award Nominee and has received a Mom’s Choice Gold Award.

In addition to keeping kids working on literacy throughout the summer, the collaboration between Martin County Library System and Extended Day aims to develop the bond between students and homework helpers.  To ensure the familiarity and trust established with students in summer continues into the school year, the library system sends staff assigned to community library Homework Helper centers to the nearest Extended Day site.

Homework helpers are on hand to help children, teens and their parents with all their assignment and project needs at the Cummings Library in Palm City, Elisabeth Lahti Library in Indiantown, Hobe Sound Public Library, Hoke Library in Jensen Beach and Robert Morgade Library in Stuart.  Blake Library will also have a Homework Helper by the start of the school year.
