Teen Summer Reading Program, Own the Night – Read All About It!

Teens Own the Night at Martin County Libraries This Summer

Starting May 26, Martin County Library System’s Teen Summer Reading Program, Own the Night, is in full swing! Enjoy prizes, incentives, movies, contests and events throughout the summer.  Submit book reviews on our website (www.library.martin.fl.us) until August 11 to earn volunteer hours or win raffle tickets for prizes. The Teen Summer Reading Program is open to students entering 6th through 12th grades. Program funding provided by the six MCLS Friends groups. Prizes and advertising have been provided by the Library Foundation of Martin County. All summer reading events and special events are free. Robert Morgade Library “Creatures of the Night” Art Fair
Calling all artists! Get busy creating a work of art featuring zombies, vampires, werewolves or any other creature of the night. The Morgade Library is hosting a summer art fair for teens in grades 6-12. Submissions should reflect the theme, and be appropriate for viewing in the library setting. All art will be on display in the Teen Zone, and winners will be decided by a ballot vote beginning August 1. Winners to be announced August 10. Submissions accepted at the Robert Morgade Library beginning May 26, please call 772-463-3245 for more information.

Annual Hoke Library Teen Summer Reading Art Display: OWN THE NIGHT
Submit your art to be showcased in our annual art display. This year’s theme is “Own the Night.” Create your own art with this theme. Artwork should be no larger than 20”x20” in any art medium to be displayed all summer long. Be sure to drop off your art and include your full name, age and phone number before June 15.

Blake Library Own the Night BINGO
Complete all nine BINGO squares between June 1 and July 31 and win a custom design flash drive. Pick up your BINGO card at the Blake Library starting June 1 at the Children’s Desk.

Fridays starting June 8, 1:30-2:30 p.m. – Hunger Tales, Elisabeth Lahti Library – Every Friday (Viernes) starting June 8, we will present Hunger Tales, an audiobook/read-along to the tale of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. Read along while we listen and enter our very own Cornucopia. Together we will discover who the final victor will be. A snack and drink will be provided.

*Tuesdays, June 5, 19 & 26, 4:00-5:00 p.m. – Hunger Games Book Club, Hobe Sound Public Library – Join us for lively discussions of The Hunger Games, games and trivia and a free book! Along with these activities we will also have an archery demonstration June 19 and a surprise activity June 26! Stop by the Hobe Sound Public Library to register or call 772-546-2257 to reserve your book and your place.

Tuesdays, June 12 & July 24, 3:00-5:00 p.m. – Game On!: Video Game Night, Blake Library –  Let the battles begin—show off your competitive spirit while playing Xbox Kinect and Nintendo Wii. Refreshments will be provided to help you chill during your breaks.

Wednesdays, June 13 & July 11, 4:00-5:00 p.m. – Teen Advisory Board, Blake Library – Join us for the Blake Library Teen Advisory Board to help plan and coordinate library events for teens. Let your invested time count as volunteer time. A volunteer application must be submitted prior to the meeting. Refreshments will be served. For more information, call 772-221-1407.

Fridays, June 15, July 20 & August 10, 6:00-7:00 p.m. – Hunger Games Book Club, Hoke Library – This summer enjoy the three-part book series that everyone is talking about. Hosted by Hoke Library’s very own Homework Helper, the book club will include trivia, discussion, games and prizes. Stop by the Hoke Library to pick up your books. *June 16, Saturday, 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. – The Great Makeup Mix-up, Hobe Sound Public Library – Mix, stir, shake and blend your way to a beautiful YOU! With the help of a makeup artist and girl talk expert, you will mix a custom blend of eye shadows, lip gloss, and mineral powders using this season’s hottest and trendiest colors. All materials will be provided. Pre-registration required. Limited to 15 participants. Call 772-546-2257 to register. Grades 6-12.

*June 21, Thursday, 6:00-8:00 p.m. – The Night Circus: Carnival at the Library for Teens and Adults, Blake Library – Enter a magical world of jugglers, fortune tellers, stilt walkers, and mimes as we bring the Alex Award-winning novel, The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern, to life. Enjoy carnival food and atmosphere. Pre-registration required. Call 772-221-1407.

June 22, Friday, 5:30-7:30 p.m. – Teen Scene: Zombie Café, Cummings Library – Have zombies on the brain? Come dressed in your zombie finest. Get zombie makeup applied and play some zombie games. Enjoy zombie food and decorate your own zombie cupcake. Have FUN and meet other zombie fans!

*Fridays, June 22 & 29, 6:00-8:00 p.m. – Put Your Best Face Forward, Hoke Library – This two-part series by Marybeth Pena will give teens hands-on practical advice on skin care and protection as well as exploring the issues of self-esteem and communication skills. June 27, Wednesday, 6:00-7:30 p.m. – Teen Zone: Zombie Felties, Robert Morgade Library –
Make time to stop by the Anderson Room to hang out with your friends, craft, play video games, and eat pizza.

July 13, Friday, 5:30-7:00 p.m. – Own the Night: Tie Dye, Manga, Video Game Night, Hoke Library – Teens, come join us! We will be providing T-shirts for tie-dyeing, video games to exhibit your gaming skills, and we will have a manga drawing demonstration to learn how to create your own art! All materials will be provided.

*July 14, Saturday, 3:00-5:00 p.m. – Teen Graffiti Art, Cummings Library – From cave paintings to graffiti letters, artists have been leaving their mark on walls for centuries. Now it’s your turn to paint the “walls” at the library. You will develop your own style of graffiti art using black lines and neon colors. Blend colors to create overlapping letters and hip-hop figures that pop off the paper. Pre-registration required. Limited to 25 teens. Call 772-288-2551.

July 18, Wednesday, 6:00-7:30 p.m. – Teen Zone: Reverse Tie-Dye T-Shirts, Robert Morgade Library – Make time to stop by the Anderson Room to hang out with your friends, craft, play video games, and eat pizza.

*July 19, Thursday, 6:00-7:30 p.m. – Dream Interpretation, Blake Library – Join Countess Nadia Starella, local clairvoyant, counselor and mystic, as she teaches you how to interpret your dreams to reveal deeper meanings of life. Pre-registration required. Call 772-221-1407.

July 21, Saturday, 3:00-5:00 p.m. – Zombie Masks, Hobe Sound Public Library – Get ready for the Zombie Prom! Create your own ghoulish and scary mask to wear for the Zombie Prom on August 18 or just come to have some creative fun at the library. All materials will be provided—you bring your creativity.

*July 25, Wednesday, 3:30-5:00 p.m. – Dream Journal, Blake Library – Follow up our great Dream Interpretation program by using your inspiration to create your very own dream journal. Pre-registration required. Call 772-221-1407 to register.

*July 28, Saturday, 11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. – Hands-on Circus Camp: A Juggling Experience for Tweens and Teens, Hobe Sound Public Library – Lizi Franzini, international circus performer, brings spinning plates, beanbags, juggling scarves, diabolos and crystal sticks for hands-on action. Pre-registration required. Limited to 60 participants. Call the branch library to register. Grades 5-12.

July 28, Saturday, 3:00-5:00 p.m. – Teen Scene: Steampunk Saturday, Cummings Library – Join us for some Steampunk Fun! During the program you can watch a screening of a related movie (PG 13). Also make a steampunk collage or some steampunk jewelry. Feel free to come dressed to the theme, but costumes are definitely not required! A snack will be served.

August 3, Friday, 6:00-7:00 p.m. – Zombie Fest, Hoke Library – Join us for an evening of brains, target practice, crafts and zombie makeovers. Undead dress highly recommended. Grades 6-12.

August 8, Wednesday, 6:00-7:30 p.m. – Teen Zone: Dreamcatchers, Robert Morgade Library – Make time to stop by the Anderson Room to hang out with your friends, craft, play video games, and eat pizza.

August 18, Tuesday, 3:00-5:00 p.m. – Zombie Prom, Hobe Sound Public Library – Come dressed up as a scary character, be it a zombie, vampire, werewolf or whatever. Wear the mask you created at the library. Let your imagination soar and have a good time with good music and good food with your friends! Looking for volunteers to help plan and decorate for the prom. Stop in the Hobe Sound Public Library to sign up to help, or call 772-546-2257. We need you!
