                                County Library System

WHAT:              Discover Opera:  Faust, by Gounod

                                Presented by Helen Sagan

Using humor and many anecdotes about opera stars, as well as DVD excerpts with

English translations, Helen Sagan will present the first in a four-part lecture series at the

Blake Library featuring operas of the 2011-2012 Palm Beach Opera season, beginning

2:00 p.m. December 7 with Gounod’s Faust. The Discover Opera series continues

January 25 (Carmen), February 22 (Romeo and  Juliet) and March 21 (Lucia di

              Lammemoor).

Beware of making a pact with the devil! In Gounod’s opera, Faust sells his soul to

Satan in exchange for wealth and sensuous pleasures. He seduces and then abandons

the innocent young Marguerite, setting in motion a dramatic and ultimately tragic

                                ending.

The Discover Opera series continues January 25 (Carmen), February 22 (Romeo and

Juliet) and March 21 (Lucia di Lammemoor).

A recently retired music teacher from Wellesley, Ma., Helen Sagan has been giving

opera talks to adults for over 16 years and is a performer herself, having appeared with

such stars as Leontyne Price, Joan Sutherland, James McCracken and Jerry Hadley. She

is a member of Boston’s renowned Chorus pro Musica and has sung in performances

with the Boston Symphony, the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, the Pittsburgh

Symphony and the American Symphony in both Boston and Carnegie Hall and Lincoln

Center in New York City. Helen has been in several staged productions of The Opera

Company of Boston with Sarah Caldwell. She currently is director of the South River
