Ken Burns – The National Parks: America’s Best Idea

Martin County Library System will present the PBS documentary film series, Ken Burns – The National Parks: America’s Best Idea, 2:00 p.m. Wednesdays, June 22 through July 27 at the Blake Library in Stuart.  Join us as we view the series as part of the Novel Destinations adult summer reading program.  The films are free and open to the public.  No tickets or reservations are required.

This 12-hour, six-episode documentary series by Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan tells the story of an idea as uniquely American as the Declaration of Independence and just as radical: that the most special places in the nation should be preserved, not for royalty or the rich, but for everyone. The films trace the birth of the national park idea in the mid-1800s and follow its evolution for nearly 150 years, chronicling the addition of new parks through the stories of the people who helped create them.

Be inspired by the parks’ locations—from Acadia to Yosemite, Yellowstone to the Grand Canyon, the Everglades of Florida to the Gates of the Arctic in Alaska—and by the people who preserved them.  To create your own travel adventures, lists with suggested reading from the library’s collection will be available for non-fiction and fiction readers.
