MCLS Presents Children’s Summer Reading Program Special Family Events

Martin County Library System offers a world of fun and exciting

family events this summer!

WHO:            Program funding provided by the six MCLS Friends groups. All books, prizes

                          and advertising have been provided by the Library Foundation of Martin County.

WHAT:      Children’s Summer Reading Program:  One World, Many Stories

                        Special Family Events

 

Take part in the summer reading program through a variety of performances, workshops and amazingly fun programs! Sign up for your reading log beginning Saturday, June 11 to participate in reading fun all summer long!

 Contest:

Hoke Library One World, Many Stories Children’s Art Exhibition. All artists will have the opportunity to display their art throughout the summer at the Hoke Library, 1150 N.W. Jack Williams Way, Jensen Beach. Art should include the theme and adhere to the size limit. Please write name, age and contact info on the back of art. Open to grades K-5. Entry deadline: Saturday, July 2 at 5:30 p.m. (or before). Theme: “One World, Many Stories.” Size limit: 20″ x 20.”

Ongoing programs:

Mondays at 11:15-11:45 a.m. – Wiggles & Giggles, Blake Library, Exploration Lab, 2351 SE Monterey Rd., Stuart. Bring your wiggly toddler and enjoy a fun morning of music and movement based activities. Join your child as they engage with fun songs, instruments and exercises that aid in motor development and early literacy skills. Ages 24-36 months.

Thursdays, June 2 through July 28, 6:30-7:15pm – Family Storytime @ The Blake, Blake Library, Exploration Lab, 2351 S.E. Monterey Rd., Stuart. Bring the whole family for stories, songs, and activities for children and adults to enjoy together. Develop early literacy skills while building a love of reading! All ages are welcome.

Saturday, June 11, 10:30-11:30 a.m. – One World, Many Stories Sidewalk Chalk Art @ Your Library*, Hoke Library, 1150 N.W. Jack Williams Way, Jensen Beach. To kick off this year’s Summer Reading Program we would like to invite young artists to create a drawing with the theme of “One World, Many Stories” on the sidewalks in front of the Hoke Library. Sidewalk chalk will be provided. Limited to 20 children. *Pre-registration is required. Please call 772-463-2870, option 6, to register. Grades K-5.

Saturday, June 11, 2:00-4:00 p.m. – Celebrate Summer!, Elisabeth Lahti Library, 15200 S.W. Adams Ave., Indiantown. Summer has officially arrived! Bring the family, enjoy some fun and games, and sign up for the summer reading program! Drop in anytime from 2-4pm for crafts, snacks and video games. Learn about all the awesome upcoming summer events!

Mondays, June 13, July 11 and August 8, 6:30-7:30 p.m. – BINGO, Blake Library, Exploration Lab, 2351 S.E. Monterey Rd., Stuart. Join us for an awesome game of BINGO! Participants will learn the rules of the game, then play against one another for fun and prizes. Grades K-6.

Wednesdays, June 15, July 13 and August 24, 11:00 -11:45 a.m. – Music and Motion, Cummings Library, 2251 S.W. Matheson Ave., Palm City. It’s a fact that children love music and movement. Join us for some musical activities that provide exercise, motor development and FUN!!!!

Thursdays, June 16, 30, July 14 and 28, 11:00-11:45 a.m. – Family Story Time and Craft, Elisabeth Lahti Library, 15200 S.W. Adams Ave., Indiantown. Spend the morning with your little one enjoying stories, music and a fun craft!

Thursday, June 16, 6:00-7:00 p.m. – Fossil Discovery Hour, Blake Library, Exploration Lab, 2351 S.E. Monterey Rd., Stuart. This fun and educational program is an exploration of our planet’s pre-history with emphasis on local fossils and geology. For elementary age children. No registration required.

Saturday, June 18, 2:00-2:45 p.m. – Professor FunnyBone presents “Fantastic World,” Robert Morgade Library, IRSC Campus, 5851 S.E. Community Dr., Stuart. Inspired by Jules Verne, a hilarious journey into a world of imagination, featuring puppets, ventriloquism and a little sleight of hand.

Saturday, June 18, 2:00-3:00 p.m. – Busch Wildlife Sanctuary, Elisabeth Lahti Library, 15200 S.W. Adams Ave., Indiantown. Get to know the variety of creatures found in Florida’s unique and diverse natural habitats. See these animals live and up close! For elementary age children.

June 18, Saturday • 2-3pm – The Enchanted Bath, Hoke Library, 1150 N.W. Jack Williams Way, Jensen Beach. Join us for an interactive storytelling with the audience, puppets and Marybeth Pena. Kids can volunteer to take an active role in the storytelling or just watch and have fun. There will be giveaways and games! For grades K-5.

These classes are an extension of our Sign, Say & Play classes and follow the familiar Sign, Say & Play format with fun songs, games and activities that introduce 36 additional signs. Studies show that babies are capable of signing long before they are capable of speech. Join our new program for infants and toddlers that will develop language and reading skills and learn to communicate with your baby through sign language. Tuesdays, June 21, July 19 and August 9, 11:00-11:45 a.m. – Jazzercise!, Cummings Library, 2251 S.W. Matheson Ave., Palm City. Cindy Baxter, Jazzercise instructor, will focus on teaching children some simple movements, beginning with body stretches. Wear comfortable clothing suitable for physical activity and FUN! Boys and girls ages 6 and up are welcome and parents, too! Water will be provided.

 Read Around the World Magic Show – Full of funny stories, amazing magic, audience participation and surprises along the way! Comedy magician Lyndel entertains children while showing them that although there is only one world, there are many stories to tell.

Tuesdays June 28, July 26 and August 30, 4:00-5:00 p.m. – Lego Club, Blake Library, Exploration Lab, 2351 S.E. Monterey Rd., Stuart. Like Legos? Lego enthusiasts are invited to stop by for some creative building time with other kids! Make creations based on a theme and share your masterpiece with the group. Pictures of the Lego creations will be posted on the library’s online photo gallery. Lego Club is designed for kids ages 4 and up. Legos will be provided but gently used donations are welcome.

Friday, July 1, 3:30-5:00 p.m. – Game Day Afternoon, Hobe Sound Public Library, 10595 S.W. Federal Hwy., Hobe Sound. Drop by the library for games, puzzles and crafts. Enjoy light refreshments. Grades K-5.

Didgeridoo Down Under – Never heard of a didgeridoo? Join Darren Liebman for a “Down Under” education through this Australian-themed show including music, folk tales, and plenty of audience participation! For elementary age children.

Wednesday, July 6, 5:00-6:00 p.m. – Tampa Taiko Japanese Drummers, Elisabeth Lahti Library, 15200 S.W. Adams Ave., Indiantown. Experience Japanese history and tradition through a taiko drum performance that brings a contemporary vibrance to an ancient martial art form. Learn about drum building and design, listen and participate in a modern drumming performance and discover the history of Samurai warriors.

Saturday, July 9, 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. – The Reluctant Dragon, Blake Library, John F. Armstrong Wing, 2351 S.E. Monterey Rd., Stuart. Sir George is hired to slay the ferocious dragon that lives too close to the village, but the dragon is more interested in reciting Shakespeare than fighting. Together, they stage a monumental battle in Atlantic Coast Theatre’s adaptation of Kenneth Grahame’s charming story. For elementary age children.

Wednesday, July 13, 2:00-3:00 p.m. – Owls: Winged Warriors of the Sky, Hoke Library, 1150 N.W. Jack Williams Way, Jensen Beach. Join Hobe Sound Nature Center as we explore the world of the owl and their unique ways of survival in the wild. For elementary age children.

Dinner will be prepared and served as kids learn about wise and delicious nutrition from other cultures around the world through stories and wonderful food. *Pre-registration is required. Monday, July 25, 6:00-7:00 p.m. – Fairy House Craft*, Blake Library, Exploration Lab, 2351 S.E. Monterey Road, Stuart. Fairies have been spotted in Martin County! Flutter into the library and build your very own fairy house. Participants will be provided with building materials but can also bring additional natural materials such as shells, seaweed, bark, etc. with you.  *Pre-registration is required. Please call 772-221-1407 to register. Zany Magical Balloon Show – Balloon twisting taken to wild new extremes with a sitdown interactive show that is part physical comedy, part vaudeville, and just a little bit of magic combined with the most incredible balloon twisting you have ever seen!

Saturday, July 30, 2:00-2:45 p.m. – Make Believe Theater: Mariposa Martinez and More Tales from Latin America, Blake Library, John F. Armstrong Wing, 2351 S.E. Monterey Rd., Stuart. Storyteller and puppeteer Katie Adams performs Hispanic stories with a dash of Spanish words and a splash of colorful shadow puppets. Stories include “How Color Came to the World,” an Aztec myth about the origin of the rainbow, “The Proud Cuckoo Bird,” a Mayan tale from Mexico, “Mariposa Martinez,” a favorite tale from Cuba about a butterfly, and “Medio Pollito,” a folktale from Spain that has traveled all over Latin America.

Wednesday, August 3, 3:00-4:00 p.m. – Ocean Storytime, Hoke Library, 1150 N.W. Jack Williams Way, Jensen Beach. Join the Florida Oceanographic Society to learn more about Florida’s oceans and the creatures that live within them. For elementary age children.

Saturday, August 6, 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. – Around the World BINGO, Cummings Library, 2251 S.W. Matheson Ave., Palm City. Come join us to play some fun games of Around the World Bingo! Bring a friend, enjoy refreshments and win some prizes. Travel around the world without leaving the library! Ages 6 and up.

Tuesday, August 9, 3:30-5:00 p.m. – Back to School Ice Cream Social, Hobe Sound Public Library, 10595 S.W. Federal Hwy., Hobe Sound. Students in grades K and up are invited to cool off with an ice cream sundae social sponsored by the Friends of the Hobe Sound Library, Inc.

Wednesday, August 10, 4:00-5:00 p.m. – The Great Chocolate Chip Cookie Excavation, Elisabeth Lahti Library, 15200 S.W. Adams Ave., Indiantown. Using a medium that all kids love (cookies!), this activity teaches students the basic skills and methodology behind the science of archaeology. For elementary age children.

August 12, Friday • 3:30-5pm – Treasure from Trash!: Recycle Craft*, Hobe Sound Public Library, 10595 S.W. Federal Hwy., Hobe Sound. Kids and families, join us for a fun afternoon creating your own masterpiece from junk. *Pre-registration is required. Please call 772-546-2257.
