Presented by George Frein, Ph.D.

Martin County Library System will present “American Imagination: Dr. Seuss” 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 4 in the John F. Armstrong Wing of the Blake Library, with veteran Chautauqua performer Dr. George Frein playing the beloved children’s book author.

The second of four Chautauqua-style performances in the Chautauqua South arts and education series, the presentation includes a Q&A session in and out of character.  The program is free and open to the public.  No tickets or reservations are required.

In his 1955 book, Why Johnny Can’t Read, Rudolf Flesch called attention to a national scandal: America’s children were nearly illiterate. His solution was to return to teaching phonics, which helped a little. What helped more were nearly 50 books written and illustrated by Dr. Seuss, who said of his style: “I like nonsense; it wakes up the brain cells.” Dr. Seuss made reading fun for toddlers, children and adults.

George Frein is Professor Emeritus of Philosophy and Religion at the University of North Dakota and Adjunct Professor of Religion at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina.  He is currently the director of the National Chautauqua Tour, a group of humanities scholars making Chautauqua available nationwide.  In addition to Dr. Seuss, Dr. Frein has portrayed Herman Melville, Henry Adams, John James Audubon, Abraham Lincoln and Mark Twain.  George lives in Greenville, SC,  with his wife and their two children.
