IRSC Professor Series: The Experience of Poetry

Presented by Roderick Hofer, Ph.D.

Dr. Roderick Hofer, professor of English at Indian River State College, will present a three-part poetry series, “The Experience of Poetry,” 2:00 – 3:30 p.m. February 25, March 23 and April 8 in the Trustees Room of the Blake Library as part of the Chautauqua South IRSC Professor Series.  Following is a schedule: 

Friday, February 25:  Poetry and the Eye

Sonnet 60 (“Like as the waves make toward the pebbled shore”) by William Shakespeare;

“The Human Seasons” by John Keats; “Constantly Risking Absurdity” by Lawrence Ferlinghetti; “Prologue: The Birth of Architecture” by W.H. Auden

Wednesday, March 23:  Poetry and the Ear

(*rescheduled from January 28) 

“Poem in October” by Dylan Thomas; “Ghazal: On the Table” by Maxine Kumin; excerpt from “Litany” by John Ashbery


Friday, April 8:  Poetry and the Mind

“The School Children” by Louise Gluck; “These are the days when Birds come back—“ by Emily Dickinson; “The Plain Sense of Things” by Wallace Stevens
