Cummings Library Six-Week Shakespeare Film Series Begins Feb. 2

WHO:                    The Friends of the Palm City Library, Inc., in support of the Martin County Library System

WHAT:                 Introducing Shakespeare: Plays and Players

Presented by Dr. Alice Griffin and Mary Lou Hernandes  

 

Dr. Alice Griffin and Mary Lou Hernandes will present a six-week series, Introducing Shakespeare: Plays and Players, Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m. from February 2 through March 9 at the Cummings Library, 2551 SW Matheson Avenue, Palm City, as part of Martin County Library System’s Chautauqua South arts and education series.  Each two-and-a-half-hour program includes a movie based on a play of William Shakespeare interspersed with discussions.

Alice Griffin, Professor English Emerita, The City University of New York, received her Ph.D. in dramatic literature and Shakespeare from Columbia University.  She is the author of 10 books on Shakespeare and American theater including “Shakespeare’s Women in Love.”  She has just published “Tales from Shakespeare,” a book for young readers.   Dr. Griffin chose plots of Shakespeare’s plays with the ghosts, witches, fairies, goblins, and monsters that have entranced audiences and readers for over 400 years.  Action-filled, these comic and tragic stories capture the imagination with heroes and heroines, swordplay, dance and song, rescues and romance.  The book includes 10 full-age color illustrations and a Teacher’s Guide for classroom use.  Her website, an encyclopedia of great plays, playwrights and productions, is http://www.theaterpro.com.   

Mary Lou Hernandes is a fellow member of the American Association of University Women, taught in the Westchester (NY) County Schools and is a Shakespeare buff who attends summer Shakespeare festivals in Buffalo as well Canada’s Stratford Shakespeare festivals.
