Make Sure You and Your Kids Have the “Smartest Card” During Library Card Sign-up Month

(STUART, FL) – September is Library Card Sign-up Month, and with Florida school children returning to class shortly, Martin County Library System wants to make sure that your child has the smartest card of all – a library card.

Studies show that children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime learning.

“A library card has always been the most important school supply of all,” says Jennifer Salas, MCLS Youth Services Coordinator. “Kids can come to the library to get homework help and check out books, but they can also check out free music, DVDs and use the Internet to make after school life a little more fun. There’s a lot happening at our libraries.”

A recent study by the American Library Association also showed that families use libraries to spend time together. Forty-four percent of survey respondents report taking their children to the library for this reason.

Martin County Library System plans the following special activities during Library Card Sign-up Month:

Discover Reading with Jonathan Dickinson State Park

Wednesday, Sept. 1, 6-7 p.m., Elisabeth Lahti Library, Community Room

Wednesday, Sept. 1, 6-7 p.m., Hoke Library, Community Room

Thursday, Sept. 2, 6-7 p.m., Blake Library, Exploration Lab

Thursday, Sept. 2,  6-7 p.m., Robert Morgade Library, Community Room 

Saturday, Sept. 4, 2-3 p.m., Cummings Library, Donahue Room 

To begin the celebration of Literacy Day join the park rangers as they share how they use literacy in their jobs and meet some of the animals they care for and protect. They will also provide more information about celebrating Literacy Day at Jonathan Dickinson State Park on Saturday, September 11 including a scavenger hunt!

Ready, Set … Wait!: What Animals Do Before a Hurricane 

Friday, Sept. 17, 4 p.m., Blake Library, Exploration Lab

Join author Patti Zelch as she reads and talks about her book, Ready, Set … WAIT!: What Animals Do Before a Hurricane.  Learn how nine Florida animals sense, react and prepare for a hurricane.  Books will be available for sale and signing by the author. For elementary age students.

Best of EXPLORE: Explore Archaeology!

Wednesday, Sept. 22, 4-5 p.m., Blake Library, Exploration Lab

Ages 6 and older can explore the science of archaeology in this interactive program presented by Gregg Harding, Outreach Coordinator for the Florida Public Archaeology Network. Find out what it takes to be an  archaeologist, conduct your own “cookie” excavation, and handle real prehistoric artifacts! Pre-registration is required. Please call (772) 221-1407 to register.

Teen Video Game Night

Wednesday, Sept. 29, 6-7:30 p.m., Hoke Library, Community Room

Teens, come join us for some pizza, Wii, Rock Band, games and a craft. We supply everything but the talent! Grades 6-12.
