The Mayan Calendar and “2012”: A Passage in Time

Presented by Susan L. Wallace, Ph.D.

Armstrong Wing of the Blake Library, 2351 SE Monterey Road in Stuart,  as part of the Chautauqua South IRSC Professor Series.

Dr. Wallace will discuss the phenomenon of the alignment of the Earth with the center of our Milky Way Galaxy, popularly referred to as the “2012,” and its many interpretations. Predicted since ancient time, this astronomical occurrence is said to culminate in December 2012. In numbers of publications and visual media presentations, questions are asked as to what this might mean for the future of mankind and the Earth—are we entering a period of expanded human awareness, or approaching Armageddon and the end of the world?

Celebrate National Library Week With These Special Events!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Communities Thrive @ your library:

Celebrate National Library Week with the Martin County Library System!

(STUART, FLORIDA) – April 11-17 is National Library Week, a time to celebrate the contributions of libraries, librarians and library workers in schools, campuses and communities nationwide.

First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April.  This year’s theme is “Communities Thrive @ your library.”  Stop by a Martin County library or visit the MCLS Web site,, to see how the many types of information and services available to you there—for free—can help you thrive!

For example, in addition to children’s story times at each library, you can take advantage of the award-winning Family Place program for parents/caregivers and children 1-3 years old.   Or homework help for teens.   Or genealogy classes.  Or get the technical support you need to get up to speed with e-government services by signing up for computer classes and then visiting our public access computers.  Thanks to community partners such as Work Force Solutions, you can also receive help in finding a new job by visiting the Wheels of Opportunity unit van at certain Martin libraries.

“Libraries are the heart of every community and our library helps our community thrive,” says Judi Snyder, acting director of the Martin County Library System.  “At our library, people of all backgrounds come together for community meetings, lectures and programs, to do research with the assistance of a trained professional, to get help finding a job or to find homework help.”

The Martin County Library System is celebrating National Library Week by presenting the following special programs, all free:

2 p.m. Saturday, April 10, Chautauqua South: Cashore Marionettes, “Simple Gifts,” Blake Library. Adults and children no younger than 2nd grade.  Sponsored by The Friends of the Blake Library in Stuart, Inc.
