The Return of the Great Mother: The Resurgence of Ancient Patterns of Archetypical Feminine Energy

Presented by Susan L. Wallace, Ph.D.

Dr. Susan L. Wallace, adjunct professor of history at Indian River State College, will present “The Return of the Great Mother” 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 26 in the John F. Armstrong Wing of the Blake Library, 2351 SE Monterey Road in Stuart,  as part of the Chautauqua South IRSC Professor Series.

Our world is in dire need of new paradigms of reality.  At this, our “11th hour,” we have great need of the kinds of strengths typically labeled “feminine” but which, in reality, are to be found in the psyches of both men and women. These archetypical traits, inclusivity and patterning, creating and winnowing, intuiting and comprehending in larger wholes, have long been denigrated, and we have blindly pursued the so-called “masculine,” logical thought patterns exclusively to the brink of extinction.  More of the same is not going to save us. Logic brings us science, but intuition and emotion give us life.

Emerging from the distant past, yet ever-present, wearing ever-changing masks, the archetype of the Great Mother is omnipresent in our world today. Look around you and you will see her face: in the person of a female Afghan politician, who, despite multiple assassination attempts on her life, continues to open schools for young girls in her country; or the young woman who lived in the top of a giant tree to keep loggers from cutting old-growth forests. Look within and you will feel her touch when you respond with sorrow and sympathy to the stories of battered women in shelters.  These are all faces of the archetype.

Explore this fascinating subject with Dr. Susan L. Wallace, adjunct professor of history at IRSC.
