Speaking of Twain: Harriet Beecher Stowe and Willa Cather

Presented by Betty Jean Steinshouer

Betty Jean Steinshouer will present her one-woman show, “Speaking of Twain: Harriet Beecher Stowe and Willa Cather,” at two Martin County libraries as part of the Chautauqua South arts and education series and The Big Read Project, appearing 7:00 p.m. Thursday, March 4 in the John F. Armstrong Wing of the Blake Library, 2351 SE Monterey Road, Stuart, and 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 5 in the Anderson Room of the Robert Morgade Library, Chastain Campus I.R.S.C., 5851 SE Community Drive, Stuart. Admission is free. No tickets or reservations are required.

In this two-part play, the noted scholar and actress will tell engaging stories as Harriet Beecher Stowe, the acclaimed author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin and a neighbor of Mark Twain during his years in Hartford, Connecticut.  Part two will be reflections of Twain’s later years by Willa Cather, the well-respected author of books such as O Pioneers! and My Antonia.

Betty Jean Steinshouer has portrayed Willa Cather since 1988 and Harriet Beecher Stowe since 2000. The Florida Center for the Book has invited her to do many scholarly programs over the years, including perspectives on Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald.  She is familiar to Martin County Library System audiences as well for her portrayals of Marjorie Kinnan Rawling, Gertrude Stein and others. We are delighted that she has agreed to do this special discourse on Mark Twain for the library system’s Big Read project.
