MARTIN COUNTY LIBRARY SYSTEM OFFERS CREATIVE OPPORTUNITIES

AND REWARDS TO CHILDREN WHO READ THIS SUMMER!

Using the 2009 theme for the Florida Library Youth Program, “Be Creative @ Your Library,” Martin County Library System’s exciting summer reading program promises young readers a world of creativity and fun.  Preschool- through middle school-age children will discover lots of reasons at Martin County libraries to read all summer long—from stories and crafts to performances and prizes.

The MCLS Summer Reading Program begins June 6.  While you’re reading throughout the summer you’ll also be able to see all sorts of presentations by popular children’s entertainers at each library.  Just a few of the exciting activities you can try are mask making, sand art, fossil digging, storytelling techniques and Hawaiian and belly dancing.  For a schedule of these great family events check the June Library Connection, the MCLS Web site (www.library.martin.fl.us), call 772/221-1403, or pick up a flier at your local Martin County library.

While you’re there, be sure to visit Children’s World to pick up a reading log for keeping track of the books you read during the summer.  You can win prizes, books and even a super-cool canvas bag that you’ll get to decorate at a special party at the end of the summer reading program.  In Children’s World you’ll receive a sticker for each day you read or listen to a story for more than 20 minutes.  Those stickers    go on a cut-out of a painter’s palette with your name and entering grade level on it.  The more days you read, the more prizes you win!  Here’s how it works:

  • Read one day and pick one draw from the Children’s World treasure chest.
  • Read five days and win one book and one draw.
  • Read 10 days, win one draw; 15 days, one book.
  • Read 20 days and win one book and one draw.
  • Read 30 days and win one super-cool canvas bag (one per child, please).

This reading incentive program ends after you pass 30 days or August 15—just before school starts—but of course we hope you keep reading all summer long!
