For immediate release: Jan. 28, 2012
Contact: Susan Opasik, Martin County Library System, Public Relations, 772-221-1403

Hoke Library to Hold Fire and Fall Prevention Program for Older Adults Feb. 8

WHO: Martin County Library System

WHAT: Remembering When™: A Fire and Fall Prevention Program for Older Adults

Fact: At age 65, older adults are twice as likely to be killed or injured by fires or falls compared to the population at large.

Fact: Thirty percent of people age 65 and older are involved in falls each year, the leading cause of death from unintentional injury in the home.

Fact: In the U.S. and Canada, adults age 65 and older make up about 12 percent of the population – and their numbers are increasing.

Remembering When™ is centered around 16 key safety messages – eight fire prevention and eight fall prevention – developed by experts from national and local safety organizations as well as through focus group testing in high-fire-risk states. The program was designed to be implemented by a coalition comprising the local fire department, service clubs, social and religious organizations, retirement communities, and others. Coalition members can decide how to best approach the local senior population: through group presentations, during home visits, and/or as part of a smoke alarm installation and fall intervention program.

WHEN: Wednesday, February 8, 2:00 p.m.
WHERE: Hoke Library, Community Room, 1150 NW Jack Williams Way, Jensen Beach

HOW: Free and open to the public. No reservations required.

Remembering When™: A Fire and Fall Prevention Program for Older Adults, was developed by NFPA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to help older adults live safely at home for as long as possible.

WHAT: FINDING HUMOR IN THE NEWS

Presented by Palm Beach Post columnist Frank Cerabino

Frank Cerabino will discuss how the daily newspaper can be a treasury of humor, and how writing a daily newspaper column can be a form of therapy. He will read from some of his work and talk about the creative process of his work.

Cerabino grew up on Long Island, graduated from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., in 1977, and began his career in journalism after serving five years as a Naval officer aboard an aircraft carrier. After leaving the Navy, Cerabino earned a master’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University, in Evanston, Ill., and worked for a wire service in Chicago. He moved to Florida in 1984 to take a reporting job with The Miami Herald. After five years at The Herald, he became a general assignment reporter with The Palm Beach Post, and eventually the newspaper’s local news columnist.

Cerabino’s column appears five days a week in The Post, and a paperback anthology of the best of his 20 years of columns was recently published under the title Writing Like a Taller Person.

Cerabino is also the author of two series of comic novels – Shady Palms and Pelican Park – and a play for teenagers, which has been staged in middle and high schools across the country.
